Michael McCabe
Collaborative on Global Children's Issues
Michael (Mike) McCabe (SFS’87) is a senior fellow at the Georgetown University Collaborative on Global Children's Issues, where he is advancing applied research and a focus on global youth development in the context of foreign assistance, partnerships, civic engagement, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). His areas of expertise include positive youth development (PYD), youth leadership and collective action, learning to earning pathways, STEM education, and volunteer service.
- Has over 30 years of experience working in international development across 50 countries as: an agency leader on youth development at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and a presidential appointee/regional director at Peace Corps; a country director and grantmaker with the Inter-American Foundation in four countries; a child rights and development leader at UNICEF; an implementing partner and chief of party on youth violence prevention in Central America with USAID/Creative Associates; the vice president of Youth Service America, and other positions.
- His expertise and passion are working with youth leaders, youth-led organizations, and allies on advancing effective youth in development, inclusion, STEM innovation, and peacebuilding policies. He has worked with young people, governments, donor agencies, UN agencies, and nongovernmental organizations in the United States, Latin America, Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and the Pacific.
- Served as the former global youth coordinator at USAID, overseeing policy and practice for $290 million in global youth development programs across 90 countries and advancing USAID’s commitments to meaningful and inclusive youth engagement.
- Currently serves as the CEO/Founder of Ignite Collective Leadership LLC and works with clients such as the mEducation Alliance as their senior advisor on STEM and youth, as well as other clients in global youth development. He is the president of the Rotary Club of Washington Global, comprising international development professionals.
- Holds a Master of Public Administration in international development and international affairs from the Princeton University School of Public International Affairs and a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.
